Ratha Yatra 2012, Kavoor Mahalingeshwara Temple, Mangalore

Rath Yatra or popularly known as the Car Festival is one of the most important festivals of any Vaishnava temple in South India. Excitement of devotees knows no bounds on this day as they get a chance to pull the Divine Chariot of the Lord by their own hands. And it can indeed be felt when you see such gigantic wooden marvels moving by Human efforts. It wouldn't be exaggeration to rather call it Super Human, as it in every little sense of the word is. Lord proves it yet again by this age old Festival that, He the One who carries the burden of the 3 worlds on His shoulders can be easily moved by His simple devotees. Devotion is at times difficult to measure by our limited knowledge of science you see...

Wanted to share the photographs of a similar Car Festival / Rath Yatra organized by Kavoor Shiva Temple annually on every Shivaratri. This temple is said to be around 400 years old and is just walking distance away from our home in Mangalore. Thought of sharing some memories with you all... Thanks for reading...

  3. Have you see the rath of Rameshwaram? It's made of wood and so ornately carved that you'd want to pull a chair and sit close to fully appreciate it's beauty. And strange part is lying in the open exposed to the elements.
